HP printer setup (wireless network)

Connect an HP printer to a local Wi-Fi network to wirelessly print from a personal computer, smartphone, or tablet.

Restore network default settings on the printer

Prepare the printer for a wireless connection setup by restoring network default settings.

·         Most printers with a touchscreen: On the printer, select Restore Network Defaults from the Wireless, Settings , or Restore Settings menu.

·         For most HP printers without a control panel menu: Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons until the Wireless and Power lights blink.

·         For HP Envy 6000, Pro 6400, DeskJet Plus IA 6000, and 6400 All-in-One printers: Press and hold the Wireless button  on the back of the printer for five seconds until the Edge lighting flashes purple. It might take several attempts before the lighting flashes.

·         For HP Tango printers: Press and hold the Wireless button  on the back of the printer for five seconds until the front light flashes blue.

·         For HP Laser (not LaserJet) printers: Press and hold the Wireless button  until the Attention light blinks. The printer might restart.

Install the HP Smart app and set up the printer

Get the HP Smart app for Android, Apple iOS and iPadOS, Windows 10, and Mac to set up and use your HP printer to print, scan, copy, and to manage settings.

1.      Place the printer near the Wi-Fi router if you are setting up a wireless connection.

2.      Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

3.      Open the HP Smart app, and then create an account or sign in. If you do not have HP Smart, download it from 123.hp.com or your app store.

4.      Follow the guided installation to complete the setup for your connection type.

NOTE: 

If your printer does not display or to add another printer to the app, click the plus sign , and then follow the instructions to add the printer.

Additional wireless connection options

Use these methods to connect a wireless printer if you changed your router or ISP, or a local network is unavailable.

 

Connect the printer with the Wireless Setup Wizard (printers with a touchscreen)

Use the Wireless Setup Wizard from the printer control panel to connect your printer to your local Wi-Fi network.

1.      Place the printer near the Wi-Fi router.

2.      Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

3.      Select Wireless Setup Wizard from the Wireless, Settings, or Network Setup menu.

4.      Select the name of your wireless network, and then enter the password to complete the connection.

NOTE: 

If the Wireless Setup Wizard is not listed, select Wi-Fi Protected Setup or WPS, select Push Button, and then follow the steps to connect to the network.

Connect the printer using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (printers without a touchscreen)

Use the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button on your router to connect the printer to your wireless network.

1.      Place the printer near the Wi-Fi router.

2.      Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

3.      On the printer control panel, press and hold the Wireless button  for at least 5 seconds or until the light starts blinking. For Tango printers, press and hold the Wireless and Power buttons on the rear of the printer until the blue bar flashes.

4.      Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS button  on the router until the connection process begins.

5.      Wait for the light on the printer to stop blinking.

6.      To confirm the connection, go to the printer and press OK, the blinking Wi-Fi Direct button, or the blinking Information button .

How to Print from Windows 10, 11 Using Wi-Fi Direct

This video shows how to print from Windows 10 using a Wi-Fi Direct connection. This is useful in case a local Wi-Fi network is not available or for guest printing. You will need access to your printer to complete the process.

1.      Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

2.      In Windows, search for and open Printers and scanners.

3.      Click Add a printer or scanner.

4.      Click Show Wi-Fi Direct printers.

5.      Select your printer with DIRECT in the name.

6.      Click Add device.

7.      After the WPS PIN prompt displays on the computer, look for a PIN on the printer control panel or the information sheet that printed during setup.

8.      Enter the PIN within 90 seconds, and then click Next to complete the connection.

NOTE: 

If the PIN expires, restart your computer, and then go through the printer setup process again.

9.      If a Driver is unavailable status message displays, go to 123.hp.com to download and install the print driver.

10.  Open the item you want to print, click File, and then click Print.

11.  Select your printer from the list, and then click Print.

Print with Wi-Fi Direct (Mac)

Send a print job using a direct wireless connection between your printer and a Mac. Complete these steps while next to the printer.

1.      Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

2.      If you want to print web content, such as an email or cloud-based document, open the item before proceeding with these steps.

3.      On the computer, click the wireless icon , and then select your printer with DIRECT in the name.

4.      If prompted, enter the Wi-Fi Direct password, and then tap Join.

5.      Open the item you want to print, click File, and then click Print.

9.      Open the item you want to print, click the Chrome browser settings icon , and then select Print.

10.  Select your printer, and then click Print.

11.  After the print job completes, open your Wi-Fi network menu, and then reconnect to your local network.
